A Supplement Insurance plan, or Medigap, is sold by private companies and can help with out-of-pocket healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare.
8 Medigap Facts
- You must have Medicare Part A and Part B to get a Medigap plan.
- You can’t have a Medicare Advantage Plan and a Medigap plan at the same time.
- You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
- Only one person can be covered by a Medigap policy.
- You can buy a Medigap policy from any insurance company licensed in your state to sell one.
- You are guaranteed a renewed, standardized Medigap policy even if you have health problems as long as you pay your premium.
- Any Medigap policy sold after January 1, 2006 does not include prescription drug coverage.
- It’s illegal to sell a Medigap policy to someone who has a Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan.
Medicare Advantage plans can help lower your client’s premiums and protect them from uncapped costs. This market is continuing to gain interest. A third of Medicare users had Medicare Advantage plans in recent years.
5 Medicare Advantage Facts
- Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer extra coverage like vision, hearing, dental, and even wellness programs. They also usually include prescription drug coverage.
- Medicare Advantage enrollees are required to pay the Part B premium as well as any premium charged by the plan.
- The premium amount for the plan is determined by the difference between the plan’s costs of providing Part A and B and any supplemental benefits offered as well as the federal payment to the plan for Part A and B.
- A percentage difference is determined by the plan bid and the maximum federal payment. That percentage difference must be used to offer extra benefits and to reduce the Part B premium.
- The plan can choose not to cover costs of procedures or services not deemed medically necessary by Medicare regulations.
Part D Prescription Drug plans are available to all Medicare beneficiaries through private plans approved by the federal government. As it’s name reflects, this helps cover the cost of prescriptions. Each plan varies in cost and the drugs covered.
4 Part D Prescription Drug Facts
1. A medicare user has a choice to enroll in a stand-alone prescription drug plan to accompany Original Medicare or they can use a Medicare Advantage prescription drug (MA-PD) plan.
2. Some beneficiaries can receive financial assistance with premiums and cost sharing through a subsidy program.
3. NEW INSULIN BENEFIT! The cost of a one-month supply of each Part D-covered insulin is capped at $35, and you don’t have to pay a deductible. If you get a 60- or 90-day supply of insulin, your costs can’t be more than $35 for each month’s supply of each covered insulin.
4. Starting in 2025 the Coverage GAP was removed and the total out of pocket capped at $2,000. Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (M3P) allows beneficiaries to pay out of pocket drug costs in monthly installments.
