Each year the Worksite Wellness Council of Louisville puts on a symposium, a partner of the Mayor’s healthy hometown movement. The 9th annual conference and awards presentation was held on May 18th at the Gheens Foundation Lodge. We got to be a part!
At this event, they offer awards to businesses who prioritize health in the workplace. Businesses can apply for these awards by showcasing their efforts and results related to health and wellness. In the application process, there are several categories used to determine if a workplace should be considered a healthy place to work. The criteria actually comes from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Worksite Health ScoreCard.
We are Honored by this Award
We’ve applied for an award in years past. But this year we’ve made very significant changes for the betterment of our team members. Some of those changes include – reimbursements for a gym membership, reimbursements for Fitbits, blood drives, the designation of a smoke-free campus, and more. So, we are proud to say that THIS YEAR we were chosen as bronze winners for our wellness program.
We are so happy our city prioritizes health and wellness for Louisvillians. We are also happy to participate with the Worksite Wellness Council. Their work has obviously impacted us and many other businesses. We’ve been working harder and harder to make our workplace one that team members can thrive in, especially in ways that prolong their lives!
We Want to Be Known for This Value
If you have ever dropped by our office, especially around the lunch hour, you may have seen some of our team members taking walks outside or rushing out the door in workout clothing to hit the gym on their break. We love that! We want this value to be evident to everyone who works with us. We think it makes us a better business.
Now is the Time to Work for Your Wellness
We know it’s already halfway through the year and it’s been awhile since you may have made a new year resolution. We know the weather has been hot. But there isn’t a better time than the present to work towards better health. Your body needs regular physical activity, water, and fresh, balanced meals. You need to get rest and manage your stress. If this seems daunting to you, here are a few simple steps that can make a big difference:
- Walk more. Whether that means getting up from your desk every hour for 10 minutes of walking outside or around the office to chat with people, just get up and move. You can also turn it into a more rigorous hike that allows you to burn more calories and see beautiful sights with friends or family.
- Keep water nearby or at your desk. Drink some of it every hour.
- Cut down on things you use in excess, like sugar, caffeine, and especially smoking.
- Take deep breaths throughout your day. You could go hours before realizing you’ve been tense and not breathing deeply. Consecutive deep breaths can also help you prepare for exercise or a night of sleep.
We encourage you to commit to one or more of these steps and see how you feel! These practices have been great for our team. If you’re not familiar with our team, you can meet them here!
